Chalmers Nero D'avola 2019
|Australia, Victoria, Heathcote
The Chalmers family nursery is responsible for bringing nearly all of Australia's Italian varieties to Oz. They brought in one vine of Nero d'Avola in 2001; today, 200,000 vines grow all across the country. The family's own bottling, from Victoria's Heathcote region, sees a prominent streak of savory, earthy, umami notes (think mushrooms, damp earth and soy sauce) across fresh cherry and raspberry fruit and herbs. The acidity is surprising in its intensity. It certainly adds liveliness to the red berries and herbs. Sappy tannins add a rustic feel. Drink this at room temperature so as not to emphasize the acidity, and with creamy dishes.
